DESIGNING A FUNCTIONAL KITCHEN: 8 TIPS

One of the great things about building a custom home is that you can tailor the home to be exactly what you want! We rounded up eight features that homeowners love about their custom kitchens, so read on to discover some of the most beloved custom features - and feel free to agree or disagree, that’s part of the beauty of a custom home!

1. AMPLE WALKING SPACE ON ALL 4 SIDES OF THE ISLAND

One homebuilder said that the 42” they have on all four sides of their kitchen islands is one of the features they love most about their kitchen! It allows them plenty of space to open the dishwasher or refrigerator and still have plenty of space to stand there without bumping up against the island.

2. STOVE DIRECTLY BEHIND SINK

When we say ‘behind the sink’, we mean that when the homeowner stand at their sink, the stove is directly behind them. This allows for easy transportation when they have a full pot of water to boil. They simply turn around and place the pot on the stove! You can even go a step further and include a pot filler above your stove. Little features like this really make a big difference in day-to-date living!

3. PULL OUT GARBAGE/RECYCLING CABINET

Including a rollout garbage/recycling cabinet by the kitchen sink allows for VERY easy cleanup when you’re cooking or doing dishes!

4. DRAWERS, DRAWERS, + MORE DRAWERS

Drawers allow for SO much storage. Adding drawers wherever possible will optimize storage and organization.

5. DRAWER UNDER OVEN

Adding a drawer under your oven (if you have a wall oven) is a very practical idea as well. This is a great place to store cookie sheets, cutting boards, and all those long-and-flat odds-and-ends!

6. SOFT CLOSE DRAWERS + CABINETS

Having soft close on all drawers and cabinet door isn’t necessary, but it definitely is a great feature to include when designing your custom kitchen.

7. CENTRAL VAC TOE KICK

If you have a Central Vac system, consider installing a vac pan toe kick in your kitchen island. When turned on (with your foot), the intense suction allows you to sweep crumbs and debris right into your central vac!

8. SINK IN THE KITCHEN ISLAND

Not everyone will agree with this, but many love having their sink in the island. It’s right in the middle of the action that way, easy to access, and you don’t end up having your back to everyone while you clean up.

What are your thoughts on these eight ideas homeowners have said they love having in their custom home? Would you use any, or are there any you wouldn’t use? Or is there something not on this list that you think is a must have? Let us know in the comments!
