FALL IS HERE!

If you’re anything like us, you’re excited for the turn of the season and for the beautiful fall weather and crisp fall nights! However, each season brings a new list of maintenance, and fall is no different. One thing we have observed is that homeowners often forget to keep up with seasonal maintenance on their homes. Here’s a list of 10 fall home maintenance tips for you to check off!

  1. Clean Your Gutters- Cleaning out clogged gutters helps prevent rainwater damage to your home. Clogged gutters can cause rainwater to pool and eventually permeate your home’s walls.

  2. Trim Tree Limbs- Trimming your tree limbs helps keep your trees healthy, strong, and uniform and preps them for a good growing season in the spring!

  3. Check All Faucets for Leaks- Inspect your interior and exterior faucets for leaks and address them immediately. Not fixing leaks could lead to water damage or burst pipes. Also, make sure you have an insulator to put over your outdoor faucets to keep them from freezing!

  4. Lubricate Your Garage Door’s Parts- Garage doors need lubrication to work smoothly. Check your system’s owner’s manual for detailed lubrication information or hire a licensed professional to come help you with this service.

  5. Schedule Water Heater Service- Fall is the ideal time of year to have your water heater serviced by a professional. Keeping your water heater working year-round is important to avoid damage and system issues. Some systems require regular tank flushes and maintenance.

  6. Clean Your Dryer Vent– Lint builds up in your dryer vent and this can cause your dryer to work less efficiently, and can even cause a fire! You can clean out the vent yourself, or you can hire a professional duct cleaner to clean your vent(s) for you. If you go the professional route, while you’re at it you may as well have them clean out all the ducts in your house!

  7. Schedule a Chimney Inspection- If you have a chimney, this is the best time of year for a chimney inspection and routine cleaning, especially before your first fire of the season. Hire a professional to clean your chimney annually. They’ll make sure your chimney is safe and ready to use for the season!

  8. Inspect Your Driveway- Make sure to pull weeds that are between paver joints as they can shift pavers over time. Fill paver joints will polymeric sand. This helps hold pavers in place and helps prevent weeds from growing.

  9. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors- Test the batteries in all of your home’s detectors to make sure they work, and replace batteries as needed.

  10. Pressure Wash Your Home and Windows- This is an inexpensive proactive maintenance item that can be done to protect your home’s exterior paint. It’ll save you money in the long run so you won’t have to have your entire house repainted as often!

Are these all maintenance chores you’ve done in the past, or are you going to start them this fall? Being proactive in protecting your home saves you time, money and heartache in the long run, and the changing of seasons is an easy way to remember to check up on your house and its systems!
